Abstract: As a new driving force for the growth of industrial enterprises, digital intelligence demonstrates significant potential in optimizing waste management and has become an important catalyst for sustainable development in the industrial sector. Using a sample of China’s A-share listed industrial enterprises from 2010 to 2021, this study employs a two-way fixed effects model to empirically examine the impact of digital intelligence on centralized waste treatment and reuse, as well as its underlying transmission mechanisms. The findings indicate that digital intelligence significantly improves the processes of centralized waste treatment and reuse in industrial enterprises, a conclusion that remains robust under a series of rigorous robustness checks. The transmission mechanisms further reveal that digital intelligence facilitates waste treatment and reuse by enhancing corporate green responsibility and green technology innovation capabilities. Moreover, green responsibility drives enterprises to actively implement green technology innovations across areas such as technological processes, production techniques, and product design. As a result, green responsibility and green innovation jointly constitute a chain-mediating effect between digital intelligence and waste management performance. In addition, a higher degree of openness strengthens the positive effect of digital intelligence on waste treatment and reuse. The study also uncovers industry heterogeneity in this relationship, with the promoting effect of digital intelligence being more pronounced in manufacturing, utilities, pollution-intensive industries, process-oriented sectors, and competitive markets. Therefore, industrial enterprises should fully tap into their internal potential and actively explore pathways for digital and intelligent transformation. At the same time, relevant government authorities should play a key supportive role through targeted policies to accelerate the digital transition of the industrial sector.
